Journées Européennes du Patrimoine 2024 à la Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo – Guided tour
Agenda > Visites guidées, Conférences et Débats, Agenda global
Description
The son of a general, Victor Hugo was confronted from childhood with the violent events of his time. This gave him the determination that men of the spirit should succeed men of the sword, which is why, as a private citizen, peer of France, deputy, proscribe or senator, he was always profoundly a man of peace. For him, the purpose of this struggle was to link people together, as he wrote in Prose philosophique: ‘Man made a people is liberty; the people made a man is fraternity. Liberty and fraternity combined, that's harmony. Harmony; more than peace. Men at peace are passive; men in harmony are active’.
The new exhibition at the Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo aims to highlight the different facets of the great man's pacifist activities, presenting first editions, engravings, objects, letters and manuscripts on the subject, some of which are exceptional in that they have been classified as ‘National Treasures’ as historic monuments.
